MORNING RITUAL
Saluting the day and welcoming your body into a space of grounded awareness becomes a
sacred and personal moment.
I would like to share with you the importance of one’s morning ritual and address healthy
habits we can implement in order to aid to general health.
A great day starts with morning ritual, which allows us to cultivate a greater connection with
self and grounds ones energy. Whether you are a night owl or morning person, choosing to set
time aside for yourself each morning can have a profound impact on how you carry yourself
through your day.
This should be a sacred time, one which we keep simple, but can develop as much as we
personally please.
Each week we shall journey through the steps that pay homage to our bodies and wellbeing.
TONGUE SCRAPING
Tongue scraping is a traditional part of Ayurvedic self-care routine and is the first thing that
should be done before the ingestion of absolutely anything. It should be followed brushing of
the teeth, flossing and then by the consumption a glass of tepid water.
Tongue scraping removes more plaque and bacteria from the tongue´s surface than simply
brushing the tongue
In Ayurvedic Medicine the tongue is more than just an organ of speech and taste. The tongue
is a map of our internal environment and therefore a diagnostic tool.
By looking at your tongue regularly, you will begin to notice how often it changes.
During the night, whilst we sleep, the body processes everything that it has ingested
throughout the day. Toxins from badly digested foods, called Ama in Ayurveda, becomes
visible as a coating on the tongue.
Ayurveda believes that there are three main types of energetic imbalances that correlate
directly to the aspect of the coating: white is generally related to kapha conditions, yellow to
pitta, and brown to vata. A healthy tongue colour is a rosy petal pink.
Scraping the coating off first thing in the morning prevents reabsortion of the toxins that
should be expelled and which have accumulated on the tongue. The checking of Ama also
allows a quick self-evaluation of the body´s state, in relation to it´s capacity to digest food and
assimulate nutrients.
How to Tongue Scrape
Scrape your tongue first thing in the morning, before drinking water or ingesting anything.
Preferrably use either a stainless steel or copper tongue scraper. You can use a plastic
tongue scrapers, but these are harder to keep sanitary.
Stick out your tongue and work the tongue scraper from back to the front, five to seven
times, rinsing the scraper after each round. Follow with brushing and flossing of teeth and
final drinking large glass of warm or room temperature water.
Drinking warm water first thing provides a gentle flush for the GI tract, as well as the
kidneys and also stimulates peristalsis.
Ritualistically taking into account all of these recommendations and guidelines has made such a tremendous difference to my overall healthy and wellbeing. So grateful for all the light shed on this clear and easy path to wholeness. Blessings.
